What Is a Lunar Eclipse?
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting Earth’s shadow across the Moon’s surface. During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon takes on a deep copper-red hue. These are often called a “Blood Moon.”
This red coloration happens because Earth’s atmosphere bends and filters sunlight, allowing only red wavelengths to reach the Moon. The result is one of the most stunning sights in all of astronomy.
Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are completely safe to view with the naked eye, making them perfect for families, photographers, and casual stargazers alike.
